Pet Chinchilla Supplies
If you are thinking about bringing a pet chinchilla into your home, you will need to consider the animal’s happiness. Good chinchilla supplies will help keep your chin happy. This, of course, is an addition to love and attention. Chinchillas require special food, housing, and entertainment. If you are a completely new chin owner, please spend some time finding out their unique habits and requirements. They truly are a unique pet.
The first thing you will need to invest in is a cage. You simply cannot have a chinchilla roam around your house. Cages can be purchased at your local pet store, the can be custom designed for you, or you can build one yourself. One negative thing about buying from a store is that they usually only have metal cages. It is better to go with a cage with plenty of flat levels with no holes, so the chinchillas feet will not be hurt when running around. If you do opt for the metal wire cage, be sure to add some flat surfaces for your pet to stand.
Food is always important to a pet. Chinchillas have sensitive stomachs, so it is important to keep a careful eye on what they are eating. Special food is available at pet stores and online. Hay and alfalfa are necessary to keep a chin’s digestive track healthy. Make sure to use a bowl that the chinchilla cannot chew up if it is made from harmful material. Many plastics will cause serious harm to your pet.
Chinchillas do not take showers, but they do take baths. Chins take dust baths. You will need in area where a chin can roll around in dust, and there are a number of dust bath houses available on the market. Their fur is very dense, and the dust will help control the oils and moisture that can build up. Mold can form if chins are not provided a bath. It is funny to watch them roll around in the bath house. I would always let my chinchillas out to play and lure them back in by placing the bath house in the cage.
Chew toys are an essential element in a chin’s life. They are rodents, and need to control the growth of their teeth in order to stay healthy. Lava rocks, chew sticks, and even plain wood blocks are available at pet stores. Remember to always use safe woods, such as untreated pine.
